688,113. Centrifugal machines. LACEY, P. M. C. Nov. 22, 1949 [Nov. 22, 1948], No. 30297/48. Class 23 Apparatus for mixing a liquid in a continuous manner with another generally fluent material such as a finely divided solid material or another liquid wherein the materials to be intermixed are separately fed into a rapidly rotating steep-walled cup-shaped vessel whereby the materials are caused to travel up the wall in layer formation and are then discharged at or near the brim of the cup. As shown in Fig. 1 a steep-walled cupshaped vessel 10 is rapidly rotated by a motor 13 and liquid and powder fed into the cup through pipes 15, 16 respectively, travel up the wall of the cup in the form of a film or layer to be combined by centrifugal force and then flung outwards from the brim of the cup into a cylindrical shield 14 from which the mixture is deflected into a collecting channel 17. In the treatment of two liquids, the mixing is stated to take place as the liquids are deflected by the shield 14 into the collecting channel. The shield 14 may alternatively be conical or hood-shaped. A scraper 21 of spiral or similar form may be provided to redirect a proportion of the suspension into the centre of the cup. A scraper 22 may be arranged the full depth of the cup to free any particles which adhere to the surface of the cup. In the mixing of a powder and a liquid entrainment of air in the mixture is reduced by an alternative form of cup shown in Fig. 3, the upper margin of the cup 10<SP>1</SP> being inturned and the mixture being collected by a scoop tube 24. In the construction of Fig. 5, (not shown), a cup having its upper margin inturned as in Fig. 3, is provided on its greatest diameter with radial or tangential apertures through which the materials are discharged.
