Abstract

838,049. Centrifugal strainer separators. REIN, LEHMANN & CO. A.G. Nov. 26, 1958 [Nov. 26, 1957 ; Nov. 27, 1957 ; Jan. 4, 1958], No. 38151/58. Class 46. Liquid (e.g. molasses) creeping up the inside surface of a partition 17, Fig. 1, separating the molasses-receiving space 15 from the solids- (e.g. sugar-) receiving space 16, is prevented from reaching space 16 by a ring 19, Fig. 2, surrounding the annular slot 18 between the partition 17 and drum 2, and by an annular collecting chamber 24 surrounding the ring 19, the said molasses passing over the partition 17 and reaching the collecting chamber via openings 20 in ring 19. The thus-collected molasses flows via an outlet 25 into a discharge pipe 26, Fig. 1, connected to space 15. Mixture supplied at 12 is first received in a cup 11, and the feeding rate and the speed of rotation of the drum are so adjusted relatively to one another that a slowly-moving layer of crystals constantly covers the drum surface beneath the main body of the mixture. The holes in the drum have a shape such that the projection of each on a plane passing through the axis of rotation is either a circle or an oval. Lumps of sugar rebounding from the casing wall 1 or cover 1<SP>1</SP> are either prevented from reentering the drum, or broken up before doing so, by a retaining ring 37, Fig. 1, having its lower edge inside the upper edge of the drum.
