Abstract
919,958. Centrifugal separators. SEPARATOR A.B. Dec. 20, 1961 [Dec. 29, 1960], No. 45599/61. Class 23. A mixture of liquids having a limited solubility in each other is separated into its constituents in a centrifuge in which one of the separated liquids is discharged in a chamber 12 which is kept under vacuum and is in vacuum-conveying communication, e.g. through a slit 21, with a chamber 18 in the centrifuge rotor, from which chamber a mixture of air and of the other separated liquid is exhausted. The mixture of liquids is fed through a stationary tube 5 and flows through a distributer 6 into a set of discs 8 within the rotor 2 where separation takes place. The lighter component is conveyed via the inside of the top disc 9 into a chamber 10 and through holes 11 into the chamber 12 from which it is extracted by a pump 14. The heavier component is thrown outward of the discs and flows between the disc 9 and the rotor cover 15 and through channels 17 in the wall of the chamber 10 into the chamber 18 from which it is discharged through a paring disc 19 into a pipe 20. The paring disc also allows the air contained in the chamber 18 to be exhausted, thereby creating a vacuum in that chamber and in the chamber 12 under the influence of which particles of heavier liquid still in solution in the lighter liquid are evaporated. The liquids may be oil and water or an organic liquid and an organic extraction agent.
