Abstract

792,055. Tongs. DAVIDSON, D. P. May 4, 1956 [May 6, 1955], No. 13139/55. Class 61. [Also in Group XXXVI] Tongs for stripping insulation from the ends of wires comprise a pair of holding jaws A, B and a pair of jaws C, D for cutting the insulated covering thereon, the jaws being connected by a pivoted link I in the manner of a three-sided frame, a pin F and slot G forming the third connection and permitting relative movement of the two pairs of jaws. The cutting jaws are resilient, the upper cutting jaw C being attached to the handle N whereby it derives rigidity, the lower jaw D comprising a flat spring, biased into open position. The penetration of the jaws is adjusted by a slide E adjustably positioned on the upper jaw by a locking screw O and cooperating with a cam or projection on the lower jaw. The holding jaw A is secured to the lower handle M and has a spigot H about which the movable holding jaw B pivots, the jaw B being biased into open position by a flat spring L. Closing the handles M, N causes closing of the jaws and movement of the pin F in the slot G to separate the pairs of jaws. The lower end of link I has a cam surface which causes the jaws A, B to open at the end of a stroke. The upper end of the link I and an extension of the upper jaw C are shaped to form the blades of wire cutters J.
