Abstract

587,061. Pleating-machines. PILLINER. B. J., and VOKES, Ltd. Dec. 15, 1944, No. 25218. [Class 141] [Also in Group XXII] In a pleating-machine of the kind described in Specification 565,518, in which means are arranged to grip each end of a length of material and then approach one another to form a pleat, there is provided a fold-initiating device in the form of a spring-controlled blade which engages the material as the gripping device closes. As shown, the front gripping device consists of bars 2, 3 and the back gripping device consists of a sliding anvil 4 and a clamping dog 5. The blade 6 has two stems 7 which pass through the bar 2 and are slidable in housings 8. The blade is controlled by compression springs 14 so that it is initially at the centre of the length of material in which the fold is to be made. As the front and back gripping devices approach one another, the blade is pushed towards the bar 2 against the spring pressure until the fold is completed and the bar 2 rises. Movable abutments 9, formed by the heads of split collets, allow the position of the stems 7 to be adjusted according to the size of the pleat to be formed.
