Abstract
Natural or synthetic rubber is bonded to itself or to another material, e.g. metals, polyamides, polyurethane, phenol or casein formaldehyde or melamine resins, by treating the rubber with an aliphatic mono- or polyazo or a hydrazo compound and a di- or polyisocyanate or materials which split off polyfunctional isocyanates or a bifunctional carbamic acid chloride. The azo compound may be HO-CO -N=N-CO-O-R where R is alkyl or aryl. The Specification also includes the formula of sixteen other azo compounds. Examples of the isocyanates are triphenylmethyltriisocyanate; 2, 4-toluelenediisocyanate; and bis-1, 4-diphenylmethanediisocyanate. The azo compound may be added to the rubber in a roller mill or kneader. In an example, an azo compound is dissolved in ethyl acetate or benzene and sprayed in a strength of 5 to 10 per cent by weight onto a rubber layer. A layer of isocyanate rubber is treated with a solution of a di- or polyazo compound, and the layers bonded together under heat and pressure. Alternatively, either of the layers may be treated with a mixture of the azo compound and the isocyanate. In a further modification, the mixture may be added to a natural or synthetic rubber solution.
