Abstract

1337259 Coated leather U C B 17 Sept 1971 [21 Sept 1970] 44784/70 Heading B2E Natural or imitation leather is treated by applying at least one layer of aqueous dispersion of polyurethane and at least one layer of polyurethane dissolved in at least one organic solvent. The term "imitation leather" includes materials made from polyamides, polyesters, polyurethanes. The polyurethanes are linear or only slightly branched thermoplastic polyurethanes containing less than 0.2% free isocyanate groups obtained, e.g. by reacting diisocyanates with long-chain diols, such as polyesterglycols, polyether-glycols or polyolefine-glycols, optionally extended with diamines, glycols, amino-alcohols. The aqueous dispersions may be obtained by dispersing in water, in the presence of at least one surface-active agent and/or at least one protective colloid, polyurethanes which are dissolved in an organic medium having at ambient temperature a solubility in water of less than 25% by weight. The aqueous dispersion may be applied during one of the initial stages of finishing the leather, subsequent stages of finishing being carried out with the aid of aqueous dispersions and organic solutions. Dyes and/or pigments may be dissolved and/or dispersed in the dispersion of the solution. The leather may be finished, e.g. by coating with a polyurethane formed in situ by the reaction of a polyol with a polyisocyanate. The surface of the leather may be buffed prior to the treatment. The products may be heat-sealable.
