Abstract

790,027. Injection-moulding ceramic articles: refractory compositions. SHENANGO CHINA, Inc. Nov. 30, 1955, No. 34311/55. Classes 22 and 87(2). A ceramic slip is injected into a porous mould 10 through pipes 14, 12 and valve 13. The mould parts are closed by a cylinder 20, and when the pressure builds up in the cylinder a switch 37 is actuated, causing valves 13, 24 to be moved to positions such that fluid pressure is applied to a flexible diaphragm 16 to apply pressure to the slip in the mould and force water out of the slip through fibreglass pipes 18. It is stated that this pressure expels not only the liquid of suspension but also the " shrinkage" liquid. After a short time, compressed air is supplied to the pipes 18 to facilitate release of the moulded article, e.g., a bowl, brick or tile. Prior to moulding, the inner surfaces of the mould may be spattered with a coloured slip. In a modification, Fig. 3, (not shown) the mould parts may be held together by clamps. Differently coloured slips may be injected successively. The clay slip may comprise (parts by weight) Pennsylvania Flint, 28À5 ; Potash Feldspar, 13À9 ; Marble, 1À5; Ball Clay, 7À5; Kaolin, 8À2; English China, 15À4 ; water 25À0.
