Abstract

1381479 Porous moulds P J BATCHELOR E TWIGG and J R ALLRIGHT 24 Feb 1972 [18 March 1971] 7435/71 Heading B5A A mould member, for pressing or casting ceramics, is made from a composition consisting of porous plaster mixed with a resin additive to enhance the wear resistance and has one or more passages within it whereby suction or pressurized air may be applied to act, on an article formed in the mould, through the porosity of the mould member. The composition may comprise a mixture of α and/or # semi-hydrate or gypsum with minor amounts of other inorganic materials and the additive is a modified melamine resin preferably with a small percentage of phenol or urea resin. A pore forming agent such as a methyl cellulose may be added and an accelerator, hardener and retarder may be added to the mixture. Examples of suitable mixtures are given. The mould members may be porous plaster die members 5, 6 of a pressing die with porous or perforated pipes 11 for pressure or suction and having spaces 12 to receive excess clay from the main cavity 9 when the press is closed. When moulding is completed the suction in the lower member may be replaced by pressurized air to assist release as the upper member is lifted, the suction in this member being maintained during lifting to raise the article with the mould member for subsequent release on to a support.
