Abstract

1423795 Porous moulds WALLACEMURRAY CORP 19 March 1974 [30 March 1973] 12143/74 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] A mould for the production of clay ware from a moist plastic clay mass 20 comprises porous ceramic mould bodies 4, 5 between which the clay is pressed; release of the shaped article is effected by blowing air through fluid permeable conduits 11 mounted in grooves 10 on the back of the mould bodies, sealing material 12, 13 being provided to seal the back face of the mould bodies and of the conduits against egress of air so that the air is forced through the mould bodies to the moulding faces 6, 7 and thus effect release of the shaped article. The mould bodies are made from a ceramic material containing at least 70% alumina, up to 15% ball clay and up to 15% talc, fired to a point short of the maximum theoretical density for the material. The fluid permeable conduits 11 may be of woven fabric such as cotton, nylon or asbestos, a perforated metal tube, or a metal mesh tube. The sealing material 12 is an aluminium filled epoxy resin, material 13 a silicon carbide filled epoxy resin. The mould bodies are mounted by means of pins 24 in a backing 15 of epoxy resin, sand and gravel and have outer metal casings 16, 17. Gutters 18 and cutting points 19 are provided to facilitate removal of excess clay after pressing. The procedure for removal of the article comprises blowing air through the lower mould half during mould opening so that the article adheres to the upper mould half, which is then transferred to a depositing station where the article is released.
