Abstract

508,598. Moulding powdered materials. MACEY, H. H., and BRITISH REFRACTORIES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Feb. 18, 1938, No. 5137. [Class 87 (ii)] A press for moulding clay or other powdered material is provided with means for maintaining a zone of low pressure around the plunger and the mouth of an openmouthed mould during the approach of the plunger to the mouth of the mould, whereby air is removed and a dense brick or article is obtained. As shown, the press has a mould box 4, a lower plunger 8 and an upper plunger la. The plunger la is carried by a hollow plunger 1 having a slide box 2 provided with a peripheral rubber or like beading 7 adapted to make a tight joint with the top of the mould box. The plunger 1 is connected to a vacuum pump and has ports 3 adapted to be uncovered by the slide box when the plunger 1 descends. In operation, powder is placed in the mould box and the plungers move inwardly, part of the air in the mould and around the upper plunger passing through grooves 5 in the sides of the plunger 1. When that plunger descends further and into the position shown, the ends of the grooves 5 are closed by the slide box 2, and the ports 3 are uncovered. The final pressure is then applied. The upper plunger moves upwardly and projections 6 thereon raise the slide box 2, while the lower plunger rises to eject the moulded brick.
