Abstract

789,678. Fabric composed of adhesivelyunited threads. KIMBERLY-CLARK CORPORATION. April 6, 1955 [Sept. 30, 1954], No. 10135/55. Class 140. Non-woven, open mesh netting comprises two sets of spaced threads disposed in face-toface relation to each other with the threads of one set extending transversely of those of the other set and wholly on one side thereof, the said sets of threads being adhesively bonded to each other at the crossings of their threads and at least one of the said sets comprising highly flexible low-twist threads having a twist less than 6 turns per inch. A non- woven applique of fibres may be attached to one face of the netting, which may be used as a wrapper for absorbent pads. As shown in Fig. 2, a web 6 comprises parallel lengthwiseextending threads 7 and parallel crosswiseextending threads 8 and an applique 9 of fibres. Threads 8 are bonded to threads 7 by adhesive 10 on threads 7, which adhesive serves also to bond the fibre applique to the web. The adhesive may be applied discontinuously on threads 7, breaks in the adhesive being indicated at 11, and the web may be calendered to ensure adhesive interbonding with the cross-threads. The fibre applique may consist of natural or synthetic fibres and may be preformed and applied to the web, or may be formed on the web by depositing fibres in free condition from air-laying or carding apparatus. The threads may be formed of rayon filaments and the applique may consist of cotton fibres. The adhesive may be a solvent, emulsion or hot-melt type and thermoplastic adhesives in the form of plasticols or organisols may be used. Instead of applying adhesive to the threads these may be formed of a mixture of cotton or other non-thermoplastic fibres or filaments and thermoplastic fibres or filaments, heat being applied to effect adhesive bonding of the mutually crossing threads. The fibre applique may contain a proportion of thermoplastic fibres which may be adhesively bonded to the threads by hot calendering. In Fig. 6, longitudinal threads 7 pass over an adhesive coating roll 12 and thence through guide means 13a into the form of a cylinder around mandrel 13, cross threads 8 being wrapped around the cylinder by a rotating device 14. The cylinder is slit at 15 and passes between the rolls of a calender 16. The latter may be omitted and the web guided beneath fibredepositing means 18 (Fig. 7), and then between the rolls of calender 19. A specified adhesive is plasticized polyvinyl acetate. Specification 682,190, [Group VI], is referred to.
