Class 112 A rug-tufting tool comprises a pair of jaws mounted on a jaw carrier, one or both of the jaws being pivoted to the carrier near an end thereof, and a jaw-operating member arranged for movement relative to the carrier and provided with two surfaces respectively arranged for engagement with opposite edges of the pivoted jaw or jaws, whereby relative movement between the operating member and the carrier causes opening and closing of the jaws. The tool, which is shown as being incorporated in the tufting machine described in Specification 789,661 comprises a pair of jaws 25,27 pivoted at 23 to the upper end of a rod 15 secured by a locknut 17 to an operating rod 1. The latter is biased upwardly by a spring 9 and is normally retained in its-lowered position by a cable 5. A sleeve 21 which surrounds rod 15 is slidably disposed in a position 22 of the. machine fame. A spring 19, interposed between nut 17 and the lower flanged end 24 of sleeve 21, normally biases the latter upwardly, whereby an internal chamber 35 at the top of sleeve 21 co-acts with outer surfaces on the jaws to hold the latter closed. When cable 5 is released, rod 1 rises under the action of spring 9, jaws 25, 27 remaining closed, while they are passing through the base fabric, until flange 24 meets frame 22. The jaws then move upwards relatively to sleeve 21, till a finger 29, which projects from the latter to a position between the jaws, co-acts with inner surfaces 31, 33 on the jaws to open the latter. When cable 5 is stibsequently operated, the jaws close upon the inserted strand of yarn before they pass downwardly through the base frabric.
