Abstract
789,581. Spray-producers. SCHWEITZER ELECTROSTATIC CO. May 31, 1956, No. 16876/56. Class 69 (3). An atomizing head has an elongated chamber 13, 14, open at 15, in which a tapering needle 40 is mounted, and the needle is supported by a transducer 31 which vibrates it ultrasonically to atomize liquid flowing over the surface of the needle and supplied from an inlet 81. The chamber is constituted by bores 13 and 14 in a plug 11 and body 10 respectively, and the needle shank 41 is attached to the front face of the transducer which is press-fitted in a sleeve 30 slidable in a bore 25. A hollow stem 50 is attached to the sleeve and to a piston assembly 52 slidable in a chamber 22 and, in the non- spraying position, a spring 65 urges the needle against a seat 45 of the bore 13. A cap 16 fits over the plug and is screwed to the body, and defines an air manifold 17 to which low-pressure air is fed from an inlet 80. In order to effect spraying a high-pressure air supply is fed to an inlet 82 and passage 86 whereby the piston and needle &c. are moved rearwardly to allow the flow of liquid, fed to an inlet 81, along the tapered sides of the needle; simultaneously a high-frequency electric current is supplied to the rear end of the transducer by a cable 61 to produce the ultrasonic vibrations. Low-pressure air from the manifold 17 passes through passages 84 and carries away the atomized liquid. Outlet ports 90 communicate with the manifold and air passing therethrough assists the spray dispersal. In order to charge the spray electrostatically a high potential is supplied to the needle by a lead 91 to cause corona discharge at the needle tip 42.
