Abstract

1524539 Spray-producers AIRPRINT SYSTEMS INC 8 Dec 1975 [9 Dec 1974] 50266/75 Heading B2F Apparatus for atomizing and spraying a liquid, such as a dye or a glue, comprises a body 24, a tubular tip member 34 mounted at a front end of the body and having a frusto-conical valve seat 40, a needle 42 reciprocably mounted in the body and having a frusto-conical portion 44 adapted to seat on the valve seat, and means for supplying liquid to the seat via the interior of the tip member. The needle 42 is reciprocated by means of air passing through port 86 and pressing a piston 48, fixed to the needle, against the pressure of a spring 50, to an adjustable stop 60. Liquid is supplied through port 88 to the interior of member 34 forwardly of a plurality of leather washers 66 separating bushings 68, 70 which guide the needle 42 to seat on the valve seat 40, and which seal the front end of the body from the piston chamber. The tip member 34 is partly covered by a nose-piece 77 which has orifices 82, 84 connected to a port 90 for the supply of compressed air, which draws the liquid in a predetermined spray pattern from the tip member. The frusto-conical portion of the needle has a taper of 10‹ and is connected to a conical tip portion 46 which in the forward position of the need'e extends through the portion 40 of the member 34. The conical portion 46 has an included apex angle of between 94‹ and 116‹ which prevents the liquid sticking to the needle. The supply of liquid is controlled by a needle valve in the supply line :-in addition to the control exerted by the adjustable size of the orifice at the valve seat. The air supply lines are controlled by solenoidactuated valves.
