Abstract
1450170 Cleaning spray nozzles COMALCO PTY Ltd 20 Sept 1973 [22 Sept 1972] 44245/73 Heading B2F . Apparatus for applying sealing compound to a workpiece, includes an intermittently operated ejection nozzle (52), Fig. 1, (not shown) and means for inhibiting build-up of sealing compound at the nozzle outlet, which comprises means to direct a stream of air towards the outlet of said nozzle from a suitable air. outlet 48, Fig. 3, and means to inject a solvent into said air stream at a point 50 upstream from said air outlet, said means to direct an air stream towards the outlet of nozzle (52) including a jet pipe 42 and.adjustable means to control the rate of solvent supply and to produce turbulence of the air at the nozzle outlet. The jet pipe has a small-diameter outlet 48 and a bend 46 of relatively large radius distant from said outlet, and said means to inject a solvent into said air stream comprises a hypodermic needle 40 which enters said jet pipe 42 on the outside of the bend 46 and is aligned substantially coaxially with said jet pipe between the bend and the outlet 48 of the jet pipe. Solvent, e.g. hexane is dispensed under air pressure applied to the surface of the solvent in a container 10, Fig. 4, means being provided to control the air pressure in the jet pipe and at the solvent surface to make the former pressure at least slightly less than the latter. This is done by precision regulators 24, 26 controlling branches 20, 22 of the air supply 18, the branches being fitted with pressure gauges 28, 30. Branch 20 passes to an air inlet 14 in the cap 12 of a solvent container 10, which also has a solvent outlet 16, while branch 22 is fed to air jet pipe 42 having a diameter of 0.5 cm tapering to 0.038 cm at 44. A tube 34, fitted with a filter 36, extends from the solvent outlet of cap 12 and is connected to a small bore tube 38 which has the hypodermic needle at its outlet, said needle entering jet pipe 42 at 50. Thus, the outlet of needle 40 is located at approximately the centre of the cross sectional area of jet pipe 42 and points in approximately the same direction as the air flow. The space between the needle 40 and the hole 50 is sealed by placing a short length of rubber or plastics tube around the pipe, through which the needle is passed. Nozzle (52), Fig. 1, (not shown) is supported in a fixed bracket (54) above a turntable (56) to which can end blanks (58) are fed for lining with sealine compound, e.g. a synthetic rubber, the ejection of the compound being controlled by e.g. valve gear (62). The distance between outlet 48 and nozzle (52) is sufficient to provide turbulence in the area of nozzle (52).
