Abstract

788,602. Oil burners. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Nov. 8, 1954 [Nov. 11, 1953], No. 31253/53. Class 75(1) [Also in Group XXIX] The invention consists in a method of and an apparatus for atomizing a liquid such as oil fuel by means of a gas such as air or steam, the method comprising introducing under pressure unmixed liquid and gas into a flow passage having a convergent part 1a followed by a divergent part 1c or by a part of uniform section and uniformly accelerating the liquid and gas along the passage, or supplying oil to a stream of gas so that the oil becomes entrained in the gas at the inlet to a flow passage 16 having a convergent part 16a followed by a divergent part 16b or by a part of uniform section, the oil and gas being at the same pressure, and uniformly accelerating the oil and gas along the passage; the apparatus comprising a nozzle having an internal profile which is conically convergent from its inlet end to a point between its ends and is then conically divergent or of uniform section, the profile being, such in relation to the pressure drop between the inlet and outlet ends as to produce uniform acceleration of the liquid and gas along the nozzle. The profile is derived from formulae and is of the form shown in Fig. 1; the conically converging and diverging profile is a simplified form thereof. In the oil burner shown steam is delivered by a pipe 13 and oil by a nozzle 15 to a tapered conduit 12 leading to the nozzle 16. In a modification a nozzle according to the invention is secured to the end of a steam pipe through which an oil pipe extends to the entry of the nozzle.
