Abstract

1408021 Incinerators MIDLAND-ROSS CORP 17 Oct 1972 [29 Oct 1971] 47849/72 Headings F4B and F4T An incinerator for burning a pumpable non- homogenous liquid has means 18, Fig. 1, for separating the liquid into two fractions 20, 22 of which a first 20 has significantly more combustibles than the second 22, a combustion chamber 12 having a frusto-conical section 62 in communication with a reaction chamber 14, a burner 16 at the small-diameter end of section 62, means 36 for supplying combtirant gas as a swirling flow in the combustion chamber, and means 28, 30 for feeding the fractions 20, 22 under pressure to the burner, the burner having a first atomizing nozzle 41, Fig. 2, for atomizing the first fraction 20 and a second atomizing nozzle 58 for spraying the second fraction 22 into the combustion chamber. When used for burning liquid wastes, separator 18, such as a settling tank, divides the waste into an oily fraction 20 and a watery fraction 22 which are supplied to the burner by pumps 28, 30 via pipes 54 and 26 respectively, Fig. 2. Fuel gas supplied at burner inlet 52 mixes with air from inlet 53 and the mixture passes through passages 42, 44 between an annular head 41 of the first nozzle and tubes 40, 38 respectively to produce first and second gas streams respectively. The oily fraction exits from head 41 via an annular outlet to form a film on an annular surface 48, the film flowing radially outwardly due to action of the first gas stream and being atomized at the periphery of surface 48 by the second gas stream flowing generally perpendicularly to the film flow. The spray angle of the oily fraction may be adjusted by altering the distance between the head 41 and a deflector disc. by means of spacers 56. The watery fraction is atomized by a conventional nozzle 56. An inlet 60 provides an annular air, or air/gas fuel mixture, stream between the two atomizers. A windbox 36, Fig. 1, with a centrifugal blower and spin vanes supplies combustion air, or waste gases as fumes having a sufficient oxygen content, as a helically swirling flow around the sprays from the atomizers. The apparatus provides rapid and substantially complete combustion of the oily fraction before the tempering effect of the watery fraction influences the reaction.
