Abstract

787,767. Hinges and pivots. GARRING- TONS, Ltd. June 4, 1956 [July 16, 1955], No. 20645/55. Class 65(2) [Also in Group XXIV] A cover for a hinged joint, particularly a universal joint such as described in Specification 756,931 [Group XXIV], comprises a substantially rigid housing member 12 and a flexible housing member 20 formed as substantially part-spherical ring of double walled form, one edge of the ring being connected to the member 12 and the other edge to a movable part of the joint. The cover for the universal joint comprises two part-spherical rigid members 12 each having a series of outturned lugs 15 which inter-engage to provide means for securing the two members together by a spring ring 17. A resilient ring 18 may be fitted over the joint to form an oil-tight casing. The ends of the members 12 remote from the lugs 15 are outturned to receive a thickened end of the flexible housing member 20, the other end of which is fastened to one part of the universal joint by a thickened end 25 secured by a circlip 26, and may be protected by a shroud 27. Modifications are described in which the flexible ring is out-turned to provide the double-walled portion. Where the two shafts have only relative angular movement, the whole cover may be moulded in rubber with thick and thin portions for the rigid and flexible parts respectively. The two housings 12 may be secured together by a circlip, laced by a spring or held by a series of spring loops.
