Abstract
786,718. Trueing grinding wheels. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. June 1, 1956 [June 17, 1955], No. 16942/56. Class 60. The peripheral contour of a diamondimpregnated grinding wheel 10 is formed by first shaping this contour in reverse on a dressing wheel 24 and then bringing the latter wheel while it is rotating at relatively low speed into contact with the diamond wheel which is rotating at a relatively high speed. The dressing wheel 10 is mounted on a bracket 12 on a column 9 for drive by a motor 13 when used for grinding and by a motor 18 through a reduction gear and belt drive 14 when it is being dressed by the wheel 24 ; the periphery of the grinding speed of the wheel 10 has a grinding speed of over 3,500 feet per minute and a dressing speed of between 600 to 2,000 inches per minute. The dressing wheel 24 is mounted on a block 26 for vertical adjustment on a column 27 on an adjustable slide 28 on a worktable 19 arranged for reciprocation to and from the diamond wheel. Also mounted on the slide 28 is a pantograph mechanism 23 for converting the movements of a tracer stud 35 over a template 36 into movements of a diamond dressing point 36<SP>1</SP> for forming the periphery of the dressing wheel. While the dressing wheel is being so formed, it is rotated by a motor 22 through a belt drive 32, its peripheral speed being more than 6,000 feet per minute. After formation of this wheel, the dressing point 36<SP>1</SP> is withdrawn, the motor 22 de-energized and belt 32 loosened, the dressing wheel driven from a motor 41 through reduction gearing and a friction drive, the drive of the diamond wheel 10 effected by the motor 18, and the worktable 19 then advanced to bring the peripheries of the wheels 10, 24 into contact. The periphery of the dressing wheel has a speed for this operation of between 1À2 to 3À2 inches per minute and the period for which the two wheels are in contact may be represented by only a part revolution of the dressing wheel. Preferably, the diamond wheel is rotated at a speed between 500 to 630 times faster than that of the dressing wheel.
