In a load-supporting pallet consisting of upper and lower layers of boards with spacer members 11 and stringers 17 between, a lower layer board 13, Fig. 2, is stiffened by a rod 21 in a transverse bore, and a wire 25 housed in a bore 19 through the pallet is bent round the rod 21 and fastened at its ends to a similar rod 23 in an upper board 15. In a modification, the upper board has no stiffening rod, but has a vertical bore larger than the bore 19. A washer is laid on the recess thus formed and the ends of the wire 25 are bent over the washer. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the rod 21 lies in a groove 31 on the underside of the lower board with its ends turned upwards to fit into bores 33, and a wire 35 is welded to the mid-point of the rod 21, its upper end being riveted over a washer. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5, the rod 21 passes transversely through the lower end of a tube 37, the upper end of which passes through a dented plate 39 interposed between the board 15 and the stringer 17, and has its edge bent over said plate. In a modification in which stringers constitute the spacer members, stiffening rods are provided in both upper and lower layer boards, and the connecting member consists of a bolt threaded at each end. The stiffening rods pass through diametral grooves in the ends of the bolt, and are held in place by nuts.
