Abstract

786,371. Pneumatic springs; dashpots. LEWIS, E. M. March 5, 1954 [Dec. 5, 1952], No. 30941/52. Class 108(3) A resilient mounting for apparatus (not shown) comprises a contractible and expansible chamber 1 containing gas which resiliently supports the apparatus, transmission of the load from the apparatus to the chamber being independent of any sliding fluid seal, volume and pressure of the gas being variable independently of each other. As shown, the chamber 1 also contains liquid. Air and liquid are injected into the chamber 1 through respective valves 5 and 7. Valves 9 enable liquid to be bled from the chamber 1. A variable-setting throttling valve 15 is provided, and acts in conjunction with a piston 11 connected by a rod 12 to a bearing plate 3 for the load secured to a rubber diaphragm 2. The piston rod 12, piston 11 and cylinder 10 may be dispensed with (Fig. 1, not shown). In the latter case. the housing 1 may be charged with air only, and may be connected by a conduit having a variable restriction, with a chamber which is partly filled with liquid and partly with compressed air (Fig. 3, not shown). The dashpot formed by the piston 11 and cylinder 10 may be pneumatic instead of liquid-filled (as shown). The housing 1 may alternatively be formed by a flexible container (Fig. 4, not shown) made of stainless steel or fabric-reinforced rubber. The invention may be applied to supporting a boring machine. Several units may be employed and the level of the machine may be adjusted by varying the pressure in the respective units.
