Abstract

891,026. Gravity-controlled pressure gauges. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Sept. 22, 1958 [Aug. 22, 1957], No. 26583/57. Class 106 (2). In a fluid pressure measuring apparatus the pressure to be measured is balanced in part by a piston 14 loaded by dead weights and in part by the action of a liquid between a container 18 and a displacer 21 which are moved relatively to one another by the movement of the piston, the container 18 being fixed and the displacer 21 movable. The pressure to be measured is introduced at 11 and acts on a piston 14 sliding in a cylinder 13. The piston 14 carries a weight platform 17, and a cylindrical weight 16. Also carried by the piston is an annular displacer 21 which moves inside the liquid container 18, the amount of liquid displaced being indicated by a monometer 24. To prevent sticking due to friction, the platform 17 is rotated by members 32 engaging its periphery and driven by a motor 27. In use, the pressure is approximately measured by a Bourdon tube and the platform is suitably loaded so that the measuring range includes that pressure. The monometer reading is then used to determine the pressure, the weight of liquid displaced being subtracted from the total loaded weight of the piston 14. This is of use for negative pressures and small positive pressures. Also described, Fig. 2 (not shown), is a way of converting the apparatus for use with a fixed displacer and a movable liquid container carried by the piston 14. In this case, the liquid displaced acts in conjunction with the load on the piston, thus enabling the apparatus to be used for high positive pressures. The liquid used is preferably oil, and to prevent this being sucked into the system of which the pressure is being measured, an air vessel is included in the connecting line. A mercury seal may also be used between the oil and the system. Means such as a large reservoir may be provided to damp pressure fluctuations.
