Abstract

765,827. Pneumatic shock-absorbers. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 17, 1955, No. 7780/55. Addition to 690,945 [Group XXVI]. Class 108(3). The diaphragm device claimed in the parent Specification is used to apply compression pressure to gas in a closed chamber 28 to constitute a shock absorber. As shown, shock applied to a member 29 is transmitted to a plunger 18 which bears on a member 19 having radially-spaced ribs 20. The latter engage in recesses 21 formed in a housing 11. The member 19 bears on a diaphragm 27 which is supported by a set of annular interfitting sleeve members 24. As load is progressively applied, the upper edges of the members 24 change from bearing upon sloping end surfaces of the recesses 21, to bear upon oppositely sloping end surfaces of the ribs 20. Pressure in the chamber 28 is preset by a valve 33. Downward movement is limited by a rubber cushion 32.
