Abstract

613,253. Resilient mountings. GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO. June 13, 1946, No. 17737. Convention date, Dec. 22, 1945. [Class 108 (iii)] A resilient mounting for use between two structures 6, 7 comprises a post 9, Fig. 2, attached to the supported structure 7, a ring 35, 42 surrounding the post and attached to the other structure 6, and rubber cushioning annuli 18, 24, 34, 41 of different diameters surrounding the post 9, with the smaller of the annuli engaging the post and the larger of the annuli engaging the ring 35, 42; a sleeve engages the smaller of the annuli so as to impose axial thrusts in shear upon the said annuli, and the larger of the annuli is so engaged by an outwardly-projecting portion of the sleeve and the ring 35, 42 that lateral thrusts in shear are imposed upon it. The post 9, which is attached to the supporting member 7 by a screwed stud 10, carries a piston disc 15 held against an abutment 14 on the post by a sleeve 17. Surrounding the post 9 on both sides of the disc 15 are two rubber annuli 18, 24 which are held in a highly compressed state between the post 9 and tubular members 19, 25; the edges of the rubber members 18, 24 are engaged by annular seats 20, 26 on the tubes 19, 25 and seats 23, 26a on ring members 21, 27 which have a press fit on the post 9. Interposed between, and fitted about the exterior of, the tubular members 19, 25 are two hollow cylinders 28, 29 which have abutting flanges 32, 39 and, by reason of the co-operation of a liquid filling with the piston 15, constitute a dashpot. Each of the flanges 32, 39 has an outwardly-curved seat 33, 40 serving as a seat for the annular rubber cushions 34, 41 which are retained under axial compression by the inwardly-curved edges of a two-part channel member 35, 42 secured to the mounting plate 6. The chamber formed by the two-part channel 35, 42 and the cushions 34, 41 is filled with fluid to damp lateral vibrations, and, in order to increase this damping effect, a pair of thin-walled rings 46a, 46b of width slightly less than the depth of the channel is mounted within it; the ring 46a is of cylindrical form, and the ring 46b has reentrant corrugations engaging the ring 46a. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the dashpot formed by the cylinders 28, 29 and the disc 15 is omitted, and a single rubber sleeve 56, which is substituted for the two cushions 18, 24, is engaged by portions of enclosing cylinders 58, 59 and a central ring 57. The flanged portions 63, 64 of the cylinders 58, 59 co-operate with seats 67, 68 in the two-part ring 69, 70 for engaging with the rubber members 65, 66. Bumper pads 74 of rubber may be provided on the post member for limiting the axial movement thereof.
