Abstract

1,018,501. Central buffer couplings for railway vehicles. J. VIELMETTER. Oct. 4, 1962 [Oct. 7, 1961], No. 37641/62. Heading B7T. A rod 1 which carries at its left-hand end a central buffer coupling and is connected at its other end to a universal joint and a draw and buffer gear, is supported and centralized from below by a compression spring 13 confined between plates 5, 11, and by separately adjustable struts 29, 31 connected to the plate 11 and bearing on seats 39 fixed to the vehicle frame 37. The plate 5, which is pivoted at 7 to the rod 1, has fixed thereto a tube 27 which provides a limit stop for a plate 19 (see also Fig. 3, not shown), displaceably mounted on a tube 9 also fixed to the plate 5. Fixed to the plate 11 is a spacing tube 15 which carries an annular stop 17, and a further spring 21 acts between the plate 19 and a ring 25 which may be axially adjusted by screws 23. In operation a downward force on the coupler compresses the springs 13, 21 which exert a restoring force, but with a horizontal sideways deflection of the coupler the device tilts on one of the struts 29, 31 about one of the seatings 39, the other strut being lifted from its seating. As the whole device is thereby pivotally lifted a little on one leg, when the displacing force is removed the weight of the coupler will act as a restoring force to centralize the gear. By altering the length of one or both of the struts the vertical and horizontal mean position of the coupling can be adjusted. When the coupler head is lifted the tube 27 is lifted from the plate 19 and the rod 1 is supported only by the spring 13. The compression of the spring 21 can be varied by adjusting screws 23. The common axis of the plates 5 and 11 may, however, be arranged to lie in a vertical plane.
