Abstract
786,283. Machinery safety devices. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., AINSWORTH, J. R., and CHOICE, F. C. Jan. 12, 1956 [Jan. 13, 1955], No. 1026/55. Class 80 (4). A safety device for a clicking press of the type described in Specification 741,149 having a presser arm 10 adapted to be swung across the workpiece and a cutting knife thereon and then to execute a working stroke comprises a pair of manually operable devices mounted upon the beam which have to be operated concurrently to bring about a working stroke, one of these devices being in the form of a knob which has to be rotated. As shown, a clutch tripping solenoid is controlled by a double switch 14, 18 and a switch 22 arranged in series. The double switch 14, 18 comprises two similar switches in parallel adapted to be operated respectively by trip devices 16, 20 on the two sides of the presser arm 10. Each trip device comprises a palm knob 26 and a finger knob 28, both of which have to be pressed to actuate switch 14 or 18 through a link 48. A barrier knob 30 is provided between the knobs 26 and 28 to prevent operation thereof by other than the hand. The switch 22 is adapted to be downward movement of a stem 60 of a knob 24, which movement is produced by rotation of the knob through a pin 70 thereon engaging fixed cam surfaces 74 or 76 (see Fig. 4). Direct downward movement is prevented by an abutment 28. Thus, to complete the clutch solenoid circuit either of the devices 26, 28 must be operated with one hand whilst the knob 24 must be rotated in one direction or the other by the other hand. The solenoid circuit is completed through a relay which also closes a holding circuit, a further relay being operated on release of the devices 26, 28 and 24 to break this holding circuit. In a modified arrangement the clutch tripping operation is effected mechanically through a push-rod which is mechanically interlocked by two manually operable devices. Sliding movement of push knobs on each side of the presser arm to effect this operation is controlled by an interlock member which must be actuated by rotary movement of a further knob. Specification 667,731, [Group VIII], also is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
