Abstract

An aqueous chemical nickel plating bath contains nickel ions, hypophosphite ions, and an amount of a stabilizing additive so as to inhibit random decomposition of the bath, and not substantially reduce the plating rate thereof, said additive comprising a long chain aliphatic compound containing at least 6, preferably 6-18, carbon atoms in the chain. The additive is selected from the group consisting of aliphatic carboxylic acids and alkali metal salts and sulphates and sulphonates thereof, unsaturated aliphatic amines and salts thereof, unsaturated aliphatic long chain alcohols; specifically referred to are sodium and potassium oleate, 1 - hydroxyethyl - 2 - heptadacenyl - iminodazoline, the amineacetate known as "Armac T" (Registered Trade Mark), and the isopropanol amide of oleic acid. The quantity of additive present in the bath, calculated as the aliphatic radical, should be not greater than 100 parts per 1,000,000 parts by weight of the bath, so as to form a hydrophobic film on the suspensoids that initiate the random decomposition, without forming such a film on the material to be plated (which is the usual catalytic material). Specifications 761,062 and 785,693 also are referred to.
