785,758. Impregnating-compositions for electric insulation. BOW-MAC (PRODUCTS), Ltd., ROBERTS, W. K., and BROWNE, F. J. July 1, 1955 [July 8, 1954], No. 20077/54. Class 140. The electrical resistivity of reinforced concrete railway sleepers is improved by first drying them to remove moisture at least to the depth to be impregnated and then impregnating them throughout or to a substantial depth with grease, wax or other water-repellant materials such as silicones, phenol-formaldehyde resin or paraffin wax. The sleeper may be dried by heating, e.g. by passing a current through the reinforcement or by heating in a vacuum or by vacuum drying alone. The impregnant may be applied melted or in solution in for example paraffin and the impregnant may be introduced with the sleeper into a vacuum chamber and then forced into the sleeper by applying pressure. Thermosetting resins may be cured by heating the impregnated sleeper.
