Abstract

761,229. Wood substitutes. ROY, H. G. Dec. 27, 1951 [March 19, 1951], No. 33884/55. Divided out of 761,227. Class 70. [Also in Groups VIII and X] An elongated board of artificial lumber, comprising. a consolidated mass of lignocellulosic particles and heat-reactive binder, the mass having longitudinally-disposed tensionbearing members is characterized by the fact that the mass is in the form of successive cross-sectional layers which are transversely disposed in relation to the longitudinal axes of the board and the tension-bearing members. Thus, a board, Fig. 1, having successive layers L of wood-particles plus thermosetting- binder, has wood facings 14 the grain of which extends transversely to the layers. A skirting, Fig. 3, made from the same material has incorporated therein reinforcing metal tubes 39 within which heating or refrigerating fluid may be circulated. Alternatively the tubes may be used to shield electrical conductors. The tubes extend transversely to the direction of the layers. A girder, Fig. 2, made of compacted layers of the same material, has reinforcing filaments 33 extending transversely to the direction of the layers. The filaments may be iron or steel wire, or manilla, hemp, flax or cotton twine. These reinforcements may be disposed at the neutral centre of the girder, to prevent longitudinal expansion thereof, or on one side of the neutral axis. Specification 761,228 also is referred to.
