Abstract

785.418. Magnetic separators. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 19. 1956, No. 8492/56. Class 117 A filter element used in a magnetic separator for fluid comprises a plate of ferro-magnetic material formed with a plurality of rows of slots and provided along at least one edge of each slot with a wall portion extending in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the filter element. As shown, a magnetic separator comprises a hollow non-magnetic casing 1 which carries a plurality of filter elements 5 each consisting of a disc-shaped plate which may be of soft iron, having formed therein a central aperture 6 to accommodate the casing 1, together with several circular, concentric rows of arcuate slots 7, each slot being provided along its inner edge with a wall 8 which is formed by material which has been pressed upward out of the surface of the plate when forming the slot. Each element has spacing pins 9 of non-magnetic material, and the casing 1 houses a permanent magnet 2 or an assembly composed of more than one magnet. A central bolt 3 also passes through two pole pieces 4 and holds the complete assembly together. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the slots of the inner row are wider than those of the other rows thus providing walls which extend further than the walls of the other slots and act as spacers between adjacent elements. In Fig. 4. each element has a rim portion 10 which is formed from material from the centre of the plate and which acts as a spacer. The portion 10 may be formed as a continuous wall or as a number of separate portions. In a further modification, both arcuate edges of each slot may have walls. In operation, the separator is enclosed in a casing having an inlet and outlet for fluid.
