Class 143 [Also in Group XXX] Fluent bulk material in pieces (e.g. sweetmeats) is fed to a weigh pan 18 from a hopper 4 by an endless conveyer 3 provided with a rotary device 6 which spreads the pieces into a single layer, a vibrating shoot 10, and a pair of side-by-side vibrating shoots 15, 16 which convey the pieces in single file and which are located above a further vibratary shoot 17 which collects excess pieces failing to lodge on shoots 15, 16 and delivers them either to the pan 18 or to the hopper 4. The weigh beam 41 is provided. with an arm 42 co-operating with contacts carried by a bridge 44 and a pair of beam accelerating beams 47, 48 arranged at right angles to one another. In operation movement of the beam to a position of equilibrium operates these contacts to cause relays A C and E (Fig. 6, not shown) to stop first shoot 17, then shoot 15 and finally shoots 10 and 16. Relay E then prepares a circuit which allows the pan discharging mechanism 40 to be operated by manual closing of a switch. The discharged material is carried to a packing machine on a conveyer 53. A mercury switch 12 on a pivoted flap 11. stops conveyer 3 in the event of an excess of material collecting in the shoot 10. In a modification (not shown), two or more of these weighing units are combined to produce an increased output.
