Abstract

783,138. Powder metallurgy. HECK, F. Sept. 5, 1955 [Sept. 13. 1954] No. 25435/55. Class 82(1) [Also in Group XXII] Metal powder, particularly copper, is formed into sheet under application of pressure and heat by passage between two operative rolls 1 and 2 arranged with the plane containing their axes at an angle to the vertical, preferably 25 degrees, the powder being fed to the rolls through a duct 10 which deposits the powder on the upper surface of the lower roll at a position preceding its highest point. Burners 4 or equivalent means are provided for heating the surface of the rolls to a temperature high enough to sinter the particles. A plurality of rollers 3 bears against the rolls 1 and 2 to support them and urge them together. Instead of or in addition to heating the rolls the powder itself may be heated before entering the rolls. The formed sheet is guided from the rolls by strippers 9 and delivery duct 8 which is provided with a cooling jacket. The powder during its passage from duct 10 to the roll gap may be protected by a cover 6 filled with a protective gas such as hydrogen. The delivery duct may also be filled with protective gas. A housing 11 around the rolls reduces the loss of heat.
