Abstract

1,053,594. Making metal strip or sheet. SHERRITT GORDON MINES Ltd. Sept. 3, 1964 [Oct. 21, 1963], No. 36178/64. Heading B3A. [Also in Division C7] Nickel metal particles of a size less than 300 microns are fed into a conventional roll compacting unit to produce a green strip or sheet having a density less than 100% of the theoretical maximum density. The strip or sheet is sintered in a controlled atmosphere at 800‹ to 1150‹ C. to lower the sulphur content to below 0À003% by weight and the carbon content to below 0À005% by weight. One or more strips may be superimposed to form a thick laminated strip. Hydrogen is passed through the sintering furnace to desulphurize the metal and carbon dioxide or preferably water in the hydrogen removes the carbon. The sintered material is then hot rolled at a temperature about the recrystallization temperature of the nickel particles to increase the density to substantially 100% of the theoretical maximum. Stacked strips become fused together free from indication of lamination. The material is cooled under a protective atmosphere to ambient temperature and then cold worked to reduce its thickness. Finally it is heated to 650‹ to 980‹ C. and cooled to ambient temperature in a protective atmosphere. If the metal has cooled in air following hot rolling it is heated in a reducing atmosphere preferably hydrogen at 425‹ to 1200‹ C. to remove surface oxidation.
