Abstract

776,544. Rolling metal powder into sheet or strip form. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. December 10, 1954 [Dec. 11, 1953], No. 34541/52. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups XXII and XXX] Metal powder at room temperature is fed continuously to the bite of a rolling mill in which the roll axes lie in a substantially vertical plane, to form a continuous sheet or strip of metal. The bite or roll gap may be pre-set, or the rolls may be normally in contact but subjected to pressure. The drawing shows two rolls 1, 2, one above the other, and a hopper 3 having an inclined shoot 4 down which the powder slides to the roll gap. The shoot has lateral confining walls 9, 10, and may be closed in by a cover plate. The lower end portions of the walls 9, 10 conform to the profiles of the rolls and the junction is sealed with felt strips 11, 12. A felt seal 13 extending across the whole width of the shoot prevents loss of powder backwards over the lower roll. The shoot is vibrated by an electro-magnetic device 14. Two gates 6, 7 extend the full width of the hopper. Gate 6 pivots on a horizontal axis and may be locked in any desired feed aperture setting by a nut 8. Gate 7 is slidably disposed in vertical slots and is used to start and stop the flow of powder. The rolls may be smooth or rough and may have a positive or negative camber. By incorporating in the powder' materials which dissociate on subsequent heating porous metal sheets may be produced. Mixtures of metals or metal with non-metallic materials may be used. The sheet or strip may be passed through one or more sintering, cooling and annealing zones, with further rolling if desired.
