[Also in Group V] Making battery plates.-Highly porous sintered metal bodies are made by allowing metal powder to settle in moulds or on webs passing through a settling chamber and then sintering. The settling-sintering process may be repeated. As shown, a strip of porous sintered metal powder is made by upwardly blowing fine metal powder by blower 4 and allowing it to settle on a travelling metallic foil or strip 6 to form a layer 7. The strip 6 is fed through the chamber 5 at a rate depending on the layer thickness required, and then through an electrically-heated sintering furnace 8 and between rollers 17, 18 to be wound on roll 9. Carbonyl iron, nickel, powdered oxide or reduced metal powder may be successively powdered on to a base or into a mould, e.g. using a succession of moulds on a heat resistant conveyer belt, and layers of different porosity may be sintered together by sintering in steps using furnaces in series. The method provides for making electrode foils, particularly for alkaline accumulators.
