Abstract
783,097. Electric immersion heaters. SINGLETON, S. A. Sept. 20, 1955 [Oct. 5, 1954], No. 28678/54. Class 39(3) An immersion heater intended primarily for use in aquariums but which may be used for boiling liquids or heating photographic developer solutions in dishes comprises a heat resisting flexible tube and a coiled heating element made from an alloy such as 80/20 per cent of nickel chrome wire drawn through and housed within the tube. As shown, a flexible tube 4 of a silicone elastomer houses a heating element 5 and electrical insulating powder 11, e.g. magnesium oxide. The element 5 is connected, e.g. spot-welded, at each end to a wire 8 crimped at 10 for securing in a plug 9 of polythene or P.V.C. moulded around the wire, the plug being pushed into the end of the tube 4. The portions of the tube 4 containing the wires 8 are secured together by a sleeve 6 and the wires 8 terminate in a two-pin plug 7. The heating element may be enclosed in a tube of woven glass fibre over which is extruded a sheath of silicone elastomer.
