Abstract
The magnesia insulation of a conventional sheathed electrical resistance heating element includes lithium oxide up to 0.010 mole per cent in order to give the insulation a fraction of ionic conductivity to total conductivity no higher than 0.6 at 1000 DEG C. A comparison is made between insulation with and without lithium oxide, and characteristics are given for such specimens showing the variation of their fraction of ionic conductivity with temperature, Fig. 2 (not shown). Variation of the ionic conductivity and electronic conductivity of the insulation with temperature is also discussed.
