A machine tool using a grinding or polishing wheel or belt comprises a shaft pivotally mounted for movement about a movably supported axis, a motor mounted at one end of the shaft and driving a grinding wheel or the equivalent mounted at the other end of the shaft, the axis being below that of the shaft and the surface pressure of the grinding wheel or the equivalent being adjustable by displacement of the centre of gravity of the shaft. A motor 10 on one end of a shaft 15 drives, through V-belt 11, a grinding wheel 12 on the other end of the shaft ; the wheel guard 13 has a handle 14. The shaft 15 is carried by a block 50 having a base 50a supported by a base A<SP>1</SP> of a frame A, so that relative displacement of the parts 50a, A<SP>1</SP> moves the centre of gravity of the shaft thus adjusting the pressure of the grinding wheel 12 on the workpiece such as a slab ingot 35 clamped between jaws 36, 37. The frame A is provided at both ends with rollers 21 embracing a shaft 20 so that the frame A can move along the shaft 20 and also pivot about it ; adjustable rubber buffers 22 limit the motion along the shaft. The shaft 20 is carried by rocker arms 25 pvioted to the machine frame at 26, one of the arms being connected to an adjusting spindle 31 operated by hand wheel 30. Dust extracting means is provided, comprising a tube filter 45 and fan 47. The frame A may be reciprocated along the shaft 20 by coupling it alternately to the oppositely moving runs of a belt 55 passing over pulleys 53, 54 and driven by a motor 51 through gearing 52 ; levers 56, 57 pivoted at 58, 59 to the frame A are acted on by a spring 66 so as to maintain rollers or balls 63, 64 on their inner ends in contact with a cam 62 ; according to the direction of actuation of the cam one run of the belt is gripped between the end of a lever and a co-operating abutment on the frame A. The cam 62 is actuated by a lever 60 operated by brackets 61 on the frame A co-operating with the buffers 22, so as to give automatic reversal at each end of the stroke. The lever 60 is also operated by a handle 78. Means may be provided for automatically operating the handwheel 30 when the frame A reaches one end of its stroke. In a modification, the rocker arms 25 are replaced by a carriage with rollers running on a track ; the carriage may be adjusted by a handwheel.
