Abstract
781,975. Adhesive surgical dressings. SMITH & NEPHEW, Ltd., T. J. April 1, 1955 [April 1, 1954], No. 9610/54. Class 81 (2). [Also in Group VIII] In producing surgical dressings, which permit the skin to breathe, of the type having a porous or microporous backing with a pressuresensitive adhesive on one surface, the surface is coated with spaced fine wavy lines of the adhesive thinned by a solvent, which lines may remain apart or touch or intersect to leave uncoated areas, by the relative movements of the backing and a transversely reciprocating row or rows of fine jets, e.g. 0.050-0.020 inch diameter, through which the adhesive is forced under pressure, the backing then passing to a drier to remove the thinning solvent before passing to a storage means. Natural or artificial fibre or plastic film backing 8 is fed from roll 7 over table 9 beneath conduit 10, having a row of jets 11, which reciprocates across the backing width for application of thinned adhesive. The coated fabric passes through warm air drier 15. Two or more rows of jets may be provided in one conduit, and two or more separately moved arrangements of fine jets in different conduits may be used. Controls for varying the speed of travel of the backing, the amplitude of reciprocation, and the rate of flow of the adhesive supply, may be provided.
