Abstract

781,056. Indicating liquid levels. COLVILLES, Ltd. Dec. 29. 1952 [Dec. 28, 1951; June 11, 1952], Nos. 30282/51 and 14648/52. Class 123(1) A metal-pouring ladle 1, Fig. 2, is provided with means for indicating a predetermined low level of molten metal therein, said means comprising upper and lower electrodes 7, 8 preferably in the form of steel pins which project through the refractory lining 3 of the ladle and are connected by insulated wire leads 11 to a plug 13 on the said ladle, the upper electrode 7 being located at the predetermined level and an ammeter, not shown, being connected to the plug 13. During the pouring- out operation the level in the ladle will fall, and when the layer of slag 15, which is at a higher temperature than the metal, reaches the electrode 7 an electric current is generated (Thomson effect) which affects the ammeter and, if desired, also operates an audible or visual signal. In a modification. Fig. 6, the electrodes 7, 8, with projecting ends 7A, 8A, are mounted within a hollow refractory member 18 extending through the bottom of the ladle and are connected in an electric circuit with a shunted ammeter 14.
