Abstract
1380493 Automatic control of the penetration depth of furnace electrodes SIEMENS AG 25 Jan 1972 [25 Jan 1971] 3531/72 Heading G3R The depth of penetration of the electrodes in an electric furnace e.g. an arc or resistance furnace, which has electrical currents induced in its furnace jacket by the magnetic field created by the electrodes, is adjustably determining the depth by measuring the potential difference at a plurality of pairs of points distributed over the furnace jacket and using the measurements to control the depth of the electrodes. As shown a plurality of pairs of points a, a' ... d, d' are joined to the contacts of a switch 9 by leads 7, the switch 9 sampling the potential difference of the pairs of points a, a' ... d, d' sequentially and connecting the selected pair to a measuring device 10 e.g. an electronic computer. The measuring device 10 supplies a control signal to a device which adjusts the depth of penetration of the electrode so that potential differences measured remain at desired values and the reaction centre of the furnace at a desired level.
