Abstract

The course of the reaction during an oxygen top-blowing process is controlled from the electrical conductivity determined between the electrically insulated lance, or a separate charge level indicator, and the metal bath. Before blowing, the level of the bath surface may be determined by lowering the lance which may comprise an extension electrically connected thereto, and then the distance between the nozzle and the bath surface adjusted. The variation in the conductivity may be used for automatically controlling this distance, the amount of oxygen blown on, and the start and end of the blowing and of the addition of flux. Two or more resistance measuring ranges may be adapted to the particular conductivity used. The process may be effected in a converter or a rotary Kaldo furnace, and is suitable for converting pig iron rich in phosphorous, wherein silicon is optionally added at the start of blowing.
