Abstract
In a top-blowing process of steel making, probes are inserted in the vessel at various levels to detect the onset of slag foaming, signal or control means being operated when the slag reaches a predetermined level whereby the blowing conditions may be appropriately adjusted. In the drawing (not shown) water-cooled probes 2 and 3 are connected to a source of current, signal means 9 and recorder 11 being included in the circuit. The slag by reason of its iron oxide content is conductive and the circuit is completed when the level reaches probe 3. Lance 10 may also act as a probe.
