Abstract
780,212. Piles. LIDBERG, A. R. March 21, 1955 [April 2, 1954; June 10, 1954], No. 8199/55. Class 68(2) A concrete pile is cast in a cylindrical shell 1 which is afterwards withdrawn, the shell being sunk into the ground by driving a shoe 10 by means of a rammer 18. The heavy parts 11, 12 of the shoe are withdrawn from the light metal casing 8 when the rammer is lifted, and are re-used. The part 11 is stepped to bear on steps on the parts 12 which are arranged segmentally around the part 11. The part 11 has a shank 15 which is secured by a bolt 16 to the rammer 18. Hammering on the head 25 of the rammer 18 drives the shoe 10 downwardly and, when the head 25 becomes level with the anvil 26 carried by the top of the shell 1, the shell is sunk into the ground without much force being applied thereto, the. space 5 between the lower end of the shell and the protuberance on the shoe preventing the force of the hammering from being transmitted by the shell to the shoe. The rammer 18 is steadied as driving proceeds by pivoted brackets 20 which swing out of the way when the rammer-is lifted. The segments 12 are connected by chains or the like 13 to the part 11, the chains being accommodated in recesses 14, so that when the part 11 is lifted with the rammer 18, and the segments 12 are free to move towards the centre of the shoe. the chains pull the segments up out of the shell 1 which is then empty for the casting operation. If the shoe casing 8 is to be reinforced, the segments 12 are allowed to remain, the chains 13 being, in this case, omitted. The shell is made in sections which have lostmotion coupling means between them so that, when the shell is being withdrawn. the upper section only is first moved and its kinetic energy helps to overcome the static friction of the next lower section, and so on down to the lowermost section. The coupling consists of a plate 35 secured to the bottom of a section 31 and projecting downwardly below the edge of the section. The projecting part has an aperture 37 with a horizontal sloping bottom side 39. An abutment 41 secured to the upper part of the adjacent section 33 projects into the aperture 37 with play a, the bottom edge of the abutment 41 being sloped to correspond with the side 39. A protuberance 47 keeps earth out of the play space a during driving. Guides 43 secured to the section 33 align it with the section 31. The underside 9 of the shoe is preferably of concave form.
