Abstract

346,573. Piles or columns. BRITISH STEEL PILING CO., Ltd. and HILEY, A., 54A, Parliament Street, London. April 11, 1930, No. 11607. [Class 68 (ii).] In making a composite pile or column, a tube is driven into the ground with a pointed shoe in front of it, and a lower pile portion is driven down so as to carry down further the shoe ; the tube is then filled with concrete and withdrawn by vertical vibratory movements. As shown, a tube A with a pointed shoe A3 is driven by a hammer, and a pile B, designed to form the bottom of the pile, is dropped into the tube A until a bolt B<1> traversing its upper end rests on the top end of the tube A, the lower end of the pile B being then some distance above the shoe A<3>. The pile is then slung by cords c<1> and hooks c<3>, the bolt B<1> is withdrawn, and the pile is gradually lowered until its end rests on the shoe A<3>. the annulus surrounding it being then filled with mortar previously placed in the tube A. The cords c<1> and hooks c<3> at the top end of the pile B are then disengaged and removed, and the pile B is rammed by means of a hammer and dolly. The shoe A<3> is pushed down, the pile B being guided by the rim A<4>, Fig. 8, and suitable distance-pieces elsewhere in the tube A. The dolly is then withdrawn from the tube A, into which is then placed a reinforcing-cage, and then concrete. The tube A is then extracted as described in Specification 197,430, [Class 68 (ii), Subaqueous buildings &c.], thus tamping the concrete. The parts A3, A<4> may be integral, or the part A may be integral with the tube A<1>, or the part A<3> may be in sections. The pile B may be of timber or reinforced concrete, or a steel tube filled with solidified concrete or steel sections.
