Abstract
780,039. Moulding-processes. FOUNDRY SERVICES, Ltd. Nov. 10, 1955 [Nov. 11, 1954], No. 32717/54. Class 83 (1). Moulds and cores are made by blowing a mixture of sand and gas-hardenable binder into a mould or core-box, and applying a gaseous hardening agent thereto as the mixture is entering the mould or core-box. The blow-plate 12 has an orifice 2c and a chamber 2e extending therearound, with vents between the chamber and the orifice. Mounted on the flow-plate is a sand container 14, which supports a blower 16 having a spring-loaded valve 17 in the bottom thereof, which valve may be operated by a lever 19. The interior of the blower is connected to a compressed-air line 22. CO 2 at a pressure of approximately 750 lb/in.<SP>2</SP>, in a bottle 24, may be fed through a reduction-valve 27, gas-reservoir 29 with relief-valve 30, and solenoid-valve 32 to the hollow blow-plate 12. Operation of the lever 19 to open the valve 17 to blow the sand into the box 10, operates a micro-switch 35 which energizes the valve 32 and allows CO 2 to pass into the plate 12 and mix with the sand as it passes through the orifice. The compressed air is at a pressure of approximately 100 lb/in.<SP>2</SP>, and this is connected to the reduction-valve 27 through a line 38, which valve provides a supply of CO 2 in the reservoir at approximately 80-100 lb/in.<SP>2</SP>. Generally, all the CO 2 is admitted before the mould is fully formed, but some may be admitted after the mould has been formed.
