Abstract

Resins prepared by copolymerizing 100 to 50 per cent of butadiene-1,3 and 0 to 50 per cent of styrene in the presence of an alkali metal are cured at 100 DEG to 250 DEG C. with 5 to 20 per cent of a paraffinic or naphthenic hydrocarbon diluent boiling above 200 DEG C. to improve their moisture impermeability. Suitable diluents are paraffin wax, lubricating oils, phenol extracts and white oils. The curing may be effected in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. tert. butyl peroxide. Suitable copolymers may be prepared using a sodium catalyst in the presence of inert hydrocarbon diluents, e.g. Varsol, naphtha, butane, benzene, toluene, cyclohexanone and pentanes, promotors, e.g. dioxane, diethyl ether and the diethyl ethers of ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol, and activators, e.g. methanol, isopropanol and n-amyl alcohol. Fillers, e.g. mica, asbestos, silica and "Dicalite" (Registered Trade Mark) may be added to the resins, which have high dielectric strengths.
