Abstract

A petroleum resin for use in the manufacture of paper-sizing agents is prepared by copolymerizing a petroleum fraction containing diolefins having five carbon atoms and having a boiling-point of from 20 DEG to 100 DEG C. with a petroleum fraction containing at least one compound selected from styrene and its alkyl derivatives and having a boiling-point of from 140 DEG to 280 DEG C. in such a proportion that the resulting copolymer has a bromine number of more than 25 and a softening point of more than 35 DEG C., the content of cyclopentadiene contained in the fraction of boiling-point from 20 DEG to 100 DEG C. being controlled below 10% by weight and both fractions being obtained by thermal cracking of petroleum fractions. The fractions are generally obtained by thermally cracking oil of naphtha at high temperatures, i.e. from 700 DEG to 900 DEG C. The cyclopentadiene content of the low boiling fraction may be reduced by heat-treatment to effect dimerization of the cyclopentadiene. The polymerization is preferably carried out in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. In the examples a fraction containing isoprene, piperilene, cyclopentadiene and mono-olefins is polymerized with a fraction containing styrene, orthomethylstyrene, paramethylstyrene, metamethyl styrene, a -methylstyrene and the like, using a boron trifluoride catalyst. The polymer is purified, reacted with maleic anhydride to form an adduct which is saponified with alkali in the presence of a small amount of rosin.ALSO:A petroleum resin for use in the manufacture of paper sizing agents is prepared by copolymerizing a petroleum fraction containing diolefins having five carbon atoms and having a boiling point of from 20 DEG to 100 DEG C with a petroleum fraction containing at least one compound selected from styrene and its alkyl derivatives and having a boiling point of from 140 DEG to 280 DEG C in such a proportion that the resulting copolymer has a bromine number of more than 25 and a softening number of more than 35 DEG C, the content of cyclopentadiene contained in said fraction having a boiling point of from 20 DEG C to 100 DEG C being controlled below 10% by weight and said fractions being obtained by a thermal cracking of petroleum fractions. In Example 1 a petroleum resin so obtained is reacted with maleic anhydride to form an adduct which is then saponified with alkali in the presence of a small amount of rosin. The sizing agent thus obtained is added to a batch of pulp in an amount of 0.3% by weight of resin component based on the weight of pulp, and fixed onto the pulp by adding aluminium sulphate until the pH reaches 4.5. The batch of pulp is then made into paper using a hand-operated paper machine.
