Abstract
Resinous oils or resins are produced by distilling a steam-cracked petroleum fraction boiling within the range 18 DEG to 54 DEG C. from a steam-cracked petroleum product, maintaining the fraction in a dimerization zone at a temperature at which cyclopentadiene dimerizes, separating the dimerized cyclo-olefins from the fraction, and polymerizing the remainder using a Friedel-Crafts catalyst at -20 DEG to 150 DEG F. The fraction to be polymerized comprises isoprene, piperylene, other acyclic diolefins, normal C5 olefins, tertiary olefins and paraffins. Specified catalysts are aluminium chloride or bromide, bromfluoride and zirconium tetrachloride. The use of boron trifluoride produces an oily polymer useful as a drying oil or for copolymerization with other resins for paints, varnishes and printing inks.
